Knitted Rose

Hello fellow crafters; Spring is in the air and Easter is on the horizon, but before we start dreaming about how many chocolate eggs we will be consuming in the coming months, we must first celebrate the best day of the year - 'Mother's Day'. Mother's everywhere work hard for us all year round, and they deserve something special and homemade on their special day, to say Thank You! for all they do. Fellow crafter and proprietor of Ribbon Circus, Amy Leader is now stocking yarn and knitting accessories and we thought we’d give you quick and easy pattern for a beautiful knitted rose brooch for Mother’s day.

For those of you who don't know how to knit, Ribbon Circus has a knitting group that gets together and swaps patterns and tips (see in shop for details), this particular rose pattern is from Knitting extraordinaire, Helen Baron. You will need

Knitting needles, from £1.50 a pair.

Yarn, from £2.83 for a 50g ball.

The Pattern

Any yarn, any weight and a pair of suitable needles.

Cast on 30sts using the thumb method.

Row 1 and 2: Knit

Row 3: K2, increase 1 stitch for each of the next 26 stitches (by knitting front and back of each stitch), K2

Row 4: Knit

Row 5: K2, increase 1 stitch for each of the next stitches to last 2, K2

Row 6 and 7: Knit

Cast off, leaving a longish end. As you are casting off, the rose will curl round. To make up, curl the rose up into a bud shape and secure with one of the loose ends. Neaten ends, leaving yarn at one end to secure a safety pin to make into a brooch or stitch onto a garment.

To Make a Ribbon Rose

Here at Blueberry Park Craft Club this month we have a lot to tips and news to share with you. Avid crafter and Ribbon Circus priopertor, Amy Leader www.ribboncircus.com is showing you how to make some beautiful Ribbon flowers to give to your loved ones on Valentines Day. Show your sweetheart how much you care by making them a gift from the heart, this is a creative and inventive way to show someone you like them. Haberdashery Ribbon Circus, in Hebden Bridge is offering craft workshops for children, just go in and find out what is happening this year. What you will need

metre wired ribbon from 95p

1 pipe cleaner 5p

1. At one corner of the ribbon hold the wire and push the ribbon down to reveal 1 - 2cm of wire. Bend the wire over. Repeat at two other corners. This secures the wire in the ribbon.

2. On the fourth corner push the ribbon down the wire so you have approximately 40 - 50cm of wire showing.

3. Roll the end of the ribbon 2 or 3 times, this will be the centre of your rose.

4. Place your finger next to the rolled ribbon and wrap the rest of the ribbon loosely around your finger, making sure you keep the bottom edge at the same level.

5. Take your finger out of the ribbon rose and pinch the bottom together. Wrap the spare wire around the bottom edge to secure the ribbon in place.

6. Wrap a pipe cleaner around the bottom of the ribbon rose and use to hand to your loved one like a flower or attach to a gift. You can now adjust the flower head as you wish.

'Tis the season to be jolly'

Christmas is here and our resident Crafter, Karen Lewis has designed some simple decorations for you to follow. ‘Tis the season of good will to all men’, so in the spirit of giving why not make a special gift for your loved ones. There are many different designs to choose from below, and they will look very festive on your Christmas tree.

You will need!

Felt squares/ or Fabric
Embroidery thread 75p

Ribbon from 20p per metre

Pack of needles from 90p

Bag of toy stuffing (wadding) £3.50

Design Your Own Xmas Decorations

1. Choose a festive fabric. We like linen, felt, gingham.

2. Practice some designs on paper and then copy onto your fabric.

3. Embroider your design using a variety of stitches.

4. Now with your two pieces, put them together right sides facing and sew together. Don't forget to leave a gap at the top approx 5cm for stuffing.

5. Turn your deco right side round and then fill with wadding.

6. Pin together the opening, placing the ribbon in too as this is your hanger and sew these edges together with Over Stitching.

7. Your deco is now ready to hang! Make lots to hang on your tree and around your home to make it all festive!

Keep warm this winter time with your very own 'Hottie'

Winter is upon us and to prepare you for the season ahead, Blueberry Park’s resident Craft expert Karen Lewis has created this wonderful ‘hottie cover’ to keep you warm at night. It is simple to make, just follow the instructions below and all the equipment can be found at your local haberdashery, Ribbon Circus www.ribboncircus.com

Hottie Cover Instructions

You will need:

2 pieces of felt – 3cm bigger all the way round than your hottie - felt (12” x 12” square) = 80p

Embroidery thread = 75p per skein

Felt or fabric to decorate

1m ribbon = 20p per metre

Needle = 90p per pack

Pins = £1.05 per pack

Scissors = 99p

Marker

Tailors chalk = £1.35

1. Place your hottie on your felt and measure 2cm all the way around, taking your markings straight up to the top. Do not shape around the neck of the hottie.

2. Pin the two pieces of felt together and cut around the lines.

3. Unpin the two pieces and work with the front. Cut out your design and pin or lightly glue in place. Stitch your design.

4. Taking the right side of the back piece mark the position of the neck of the hottie and sew, using hand or machine, the ribbon in place. This will be your hottie’s tie.

5. Pin the front and the back together (wrong sides facing) and sew together, using slip stitch or blanket stitch.

6. Pop your hottie inside and tie in a bow. You are now ready to snuggle up!

Halloween Treats from Blueberry Park Craft Club

Halloween is nearly upon us and it is time to get your pumpkins ready and to make your costumes scary!!! Our resident crafter from Ribbon Circus Amy Leader is already getting excited about this upcoming holiday. This month, we are making the most important accessory to any Halloween outfit, a ‘trick or treat’ bag to put all those sugary sweets in.

Ribbon Circus is one year’s old this month, and is celebrating in style by holding a Halloween Extravaganza; where you have to opportunity to join workshops to make masks, trick or treat bags, monster sock puppets and witches or wizard hats.

Workshops will be happening at Ribbon Circus 8 Albert Street, Hebden Bridge, from Monday 26^thof October through to Saturday 31^{st ,}where you can ‘join in’ with the apple bobbing and other Halloween treats! Admission is £5 a head; this includes all materials used on the day.

Trick or Treat Bag

You will need;

Scissors 99p

2 pieces of tissue paper 15p per sheet

Glitter glue pen 55p

Ribbon from 20p per metre

Braid from 75p per mete

Strip of card

1. Glue the strip of card into a circle

2. Fold the tissue paper over the cardboard circle

3. Glue a strip of braid around the edge of the bag

4. Attach a ribbon or braid handle

5. Gather the tissue paper at the bottom and tie with a piece of ribbon

You can decorate the bag with beads, sequins, pieces of card cut into Halloween shapes too.

Welcome to the Blueberry Park Craft Club!!!

Founder of Blueberry Park, Karen Lewis decided it was time to launch her very own Craft Club, after years of designing and making her very own craft kits. Blueberry Park Craft Club is an online Craft Club for children of all ages, who enjoy the love of making and creating. It is £30 to join for the year, and you will receive a free starter kit along with two other free gifts throughout the year. Every child will receive a news letter each month, and here online there will be lots of new ideas and different designs to try.

Blueberry Park Craft Club will be officially launching in October, so watch this space on news and updates.
